Embassy Abidjan Press Statement regarding violence at FPI rally on Saturday
“The United States strongly condemns the violence that occurred during an FPI rally in Yopougon on Saturday and offers its condolences to the victims. Freedom of assembly and freedom of speech are fundamental democratic rights and it is the responsibility of the Government of Cote d’Ivoire to protect those rights. It is likewise the responsibility of all citizens to respect the rights of others and to participate in the political process in a non-violent manner. Violence is an unacceptable obstacle to the continued progress of Cote D’Ivoire. The US calls on the Government of Cote d’Ivoire to undertake a full and impartial investigation and to take the necessary steps to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.”Sunday, January 22, 2012
